Ms LAM On-ki, Angel
Composer
Preferring to conceive in images and construct an idea with different pictures since her childhood, Ms LAM On-ki, Angel said that she had an affinity for arts and artistic creation, including choreography and composition. At the age of four, Ms LAM began to practise ballet and developed an immense interest in music since then. Captivated by the great power of music, she is sensitive to it in particular. She found herself having a strong bond with music rhythms, tempos and the atmosphere around. Ms LAM recollected that Hong Kong's pop music flourished when she was young. She once wrote from memory the melodies herself, which later inspired her to write her own music. Since then, she has embarked on her journey of composition.
Ms LAM considered that music composition is a lonesome and lonely process. She always had to stay home alone to compose beautiful music pieces. She even stayed in a forest for one or two weeks to write music. Ms LAM hoped that her artwork could be a nice blend of both literature and music to unfold stories about life and humanity.
Ms LAM's goal in her music career was to write musicals and become a scriptwriter. She loved scriptwriting and including stories and poems in her scripts. She admitted that it was not easy to write a musical and nothing could be achieved without confidence, courage and money. Having graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, she sought to further her studies at renowned tertiary institutions in the United States as they offered students a unique learning environment. However, most of them were private colleges/universities where the tuition fees were too high. Fortunately, in 2001, Ms LAM was awarded a scholarship by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund (the Fund) to further her studies in the United States. She considered that the learning environment in the United States had a profound influence on her, in particular the high inclusiveness of the tertiary institutions there to accommodate different views. She believed that any persons would be given the opportunity to learn as long as they were prepared to put in efforts. Together with their talent and some luck, they could achieve success.
Ms LAM mentioned that the tertiary institutions in the United States adopted very stringent standards for theoretical studies and the competition there was keen. She often debated with her fellow students and lecturers. Such precious experience has enabled her to acquire debating skills and learn the ways to express herself. Ms LAM said that the studies had helped broaden her horizons and identify the path to creation in the future.
Finally, Ms LAM expressed her gratitude to the Fund which had made her dream as well as the dreams and ideals of other young artists come true. It also enhanced the culture and artistic qualities of the Hong Kong community.
